Getting to Know Academic Coaching

Academic Coaching FAQs

What is Coaching?

Coaching is an ongoing, collaborative partnership that helps clients strengthen the skills, resources, and creativity they already have to achieve meaningful and successful outcomes. This holistic approach considers all areas of life—academic, professional, and personal—while tailoring strategies to each individual’s unique strengths and challenges. Through coaching, clients develop greater self-awareness, practical tools, and long-lasting strategies that support success not just now, but throughout their lives.

What is ADHD Coaching?

ADHD coaching combines evidence-based coaching practices with an understanding of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder as a neurobiological condition. It provides structured support, accountability, and goal-focused strategies tailored to the needs of individuals with ADHD. Compared to general coaching, ADHD coaching places extra emphasis on planning, follow-through, and frequent check-ins—often weekly or even daily—to ensure progress and build sustainable habits.

What Coaching is Not

It’s not tutoring. Coaching doesn’t teach subject content; instead, it helps students develop self-advocacy skills and learn how to access the right academic resources.

It’s not therapy. Coaching is forward-focused, working from the present toward clearly defined goals rather than analyzing past experiences or emotional patterns.

It’s not medical guidance. Coaches do not diagnose or prescribe; however, we may recommend professional support if needed.

It’s not a quick fix. Coaching focuses on long-term skill development and sustainable strategies rather than last-minute GPA boosts, deadline cramming, or rapid test prep.

How long does coaching last?

Coaching is flexible. Some students work with a coach for a few months to build key habits, while others continue long-term to refine strategies and maintain progress.

Can coaching help with stress and motivation?
Absolutely. Coaching helps students develop strategies to manage workload, stay motivated, and build confidence—turning feelings of overwhelm into actionable plans.

How do I know if coaching is right for me or my child?
If you’re looking for support to strengthen learning skills, develop better habits, and gain confidence in academic life, coaching could be a great fit. Every plan is personalized to meet individual needs.

Do I need a diagnosis to start coaching?
No. Academic coaching supports any student seeking to improve their learning, organization, and study habits. ADHD coaching is available for students with ADHD or those who may benefit from extra structure and support.

How often do coaching sessions occur?
Most students meet weekly, but frequency can vary based on individual needs. ADHD coaching may include additional check-ins to support accountability and consistency.
